Jewelry care guide

Small care habits can make a meaningful difference to shine, finish, settings and long-term wear.

Jewelry made to mean more.

 

The simple rule: last on, first off. Put jewelry on after perfume, lotion, hairspray and cosmetics have dried. When you get home, remove jewelry before showering, exercising, cleaning or going to bed.

 

Everyday care

· Handle clasps, chains and settings gently; avoid pulling or tugging.

· Remove jewelry before heavy exercise, housework or activities where the piece may snag or receive impact.

· Keep pieces away from perfumes, lotions, hairsprays, sunscreen and harsh household chemicals.

· Wipe jewelry gently after wear to remove moisture, oils and residue.

· Store pieces clean, dry and separately so they do not rub, scratch or tangle.

Keep jewelry away from water when in doubt

Unless a product page specifically describes a piece as suitable for water exposure, the safer care practice is to remove it before showering, bathing, swimming or using a spa. Chlorinated water and salt water can react with jewelry metals, finishes and settings. Soap and mineral residue can also build up and dull the appearance of a piece.

How to clean jewelry at home

1.  Start with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth. Gently wipe the surface after wear.

2.  For light residue on a suitable piece, use a slightly damp soft cloth rather than soaking the jewelry.

3.  Dry the piece completely before storing it. Moisture trapped around links, settings or closures can accelerate unwanted changes.

4.  Avoid toothpaste, abrasive powders, rough polishing cloths, bleach, household cleaners and strong chemical dips unless the product’s specific care instructions say they are appropriate.

Gold-plated & finished jewelry

Plated jewelry has a surface layer that can gradually change with friction, moisture, chemicals and body chemistry. To help preserve the finish, minimize contact with water, sweat, perfume and lotion; do not scrub aggressively; and store pieces separately. A finish changing over time does not always indicate a manufacturing defect.

Sterling silver

Sterling silver can tarnish as it reacts with air, moisture and environmental compounds. Store it in a dry space and reduce unnecessary air exposure when possible. Use a cloth intended for silver when appropriate and follow product-specific instructions. Avoid over-polishing details that are intentionally oxidized or finished.

Gold-filled jewelry

Gold-filled jewelry is designed with a bonded gold layer that is generally more substantial than ordinary gold plating, but it still benefits from thoughtful care. Keep it away from harsh chemicals, rinse-free cleaners and unnecessary abrasion. Wipe gently and store dry.

Pearls

Pearls require gentle treatment. Apply perfume and cosmetics before putting them on, avoid soaking them and wipe them softly after wear. Store pearls away from harder jewelry that could scratch their surface. If your piece uses natural pearls, slight differences in shape and texture may be part of their natural character.

Natural stones & decorative stones

Stones differ in hardness, porosity and sensitivity to chemicals. Avoid impact, sudden temperature changes and harsh cleaning methods. Do not assume every stone can be soaked or placed in an ultrasonic cleaner. If the product page names a specific stone, follow any special care guidance provided for that material.

Chains, clasps & delicate settings

Fine chains are designed to look light and refined, which also means they should not be pulled sharply. Open clasps rather than stretching a necklace over the head. When removing a bracelet or necklace, hold the clasp area instead of pulling on a pendant or decorative element. Check settings and connectors periodically for unusual movement.

How to store jewelry

· Use individual pouches, soft-lined compartments or separate sections of a jewelry box.

· Fasten delicate chains before storing to reduce tangles.

· Keep jewelry away from damp bathrooms and direct exposure to sprays or cleaning products.

· For travel, use a structured case or pouch that prevents pieces from rubbing against one another.

· Do not place heavy pieces on top of thin chains or delicate earrings.

When to stop wearing a piece

If a clasp becomes unreliable, a setting feels loose, a chain link opens, or a stone appears unstable, stop wearing the item until it has been reviewed. Continuing to wear a compromised piece can turn a small issue into a larger one.

Body chemistry & environment

Jewelry can react differently depending on humidity, perspiration, skincare, fragrance, cleaning products and individual body chemistry. Two customers can wear the same finished metal in different environments and see different rates of surface change. Consistent care reduces variables even when it cannot eliminate normal wear completely.

Jewelry and sleep

Removing delicate jewelry before sleep helps reduce pressure, twisting and snagging on chains, posts, clasps and settings. It also limits prolonged contact with perspiration and skincare products. Small hoops or studs may feel comfortable overnight, but comfort does not remove the mechanical stress that sleep can place on a piece.

If a piece has a complex setting, sentimental value or a problem you are not confident cleaning at home, a professional jeweler can inspect it and recommend an appropriate method. Avoid aggressive DIY repair on fine chains, stone settings or plated surfaces because the attempted fix can cause additional damage.
